I don’t know what I did, but after leaving my desktop alone for nine months, unplugging the hard drives, plugging them back in, and turning it on again, it works. Somehow. Guess that means I get to save that $2k I was planning on spending on a new desktop!

Yay! What were the symptoms before when it started acting up?

Sometimes unplugging it and then plugging it back in fixes everything.

Once I logged in, I’d have audio but no video. Video would work in safe mode. I assume it’s the Nvidia drivers for my graphics card because it’s always graphics driver issues . I need a new graphics card, but that will happen in unison with the new build.

It didn't work the last ten times, but this time...

I build computers. Ironically, my current rig started having glitches as soon as I started ordering parts for a new build...

I love it when that happens. Once, my laptop was repeatedly failing to recognize its primary hard drive. I don’t keep full-drive backups anymore (anything I care about I work on in a git repo that’s pushed to my VPS which is backed up in two different ways), so I was resigned to ordering a new drive and then spending a couple nights re-installing and re-configuring my roll-your-own Linux distro. I decided to put that off until after I got back from a weeklong backpacking trip. Upon my return, I decided to try booting it up one more time, just in case. It worked fine. It’s still working three years later.

You saved $2K?
It is your destiny

I mean, I'm also dropping $1500 on a camera in the next month, so it's not like I have more money, just different goals.

Jeebus. That's a lot of money on a camera (I know it isn't)

It's on sale, too. $600 off helps.

What are you getting?

Sony A7II.

Very cool. I want to go mirrorless, but I can’t justify a new / better camera yet. Don’t have the time to commit to using it. So for now I’ll just watch and see what everyone else gets and how they use it. Eventually I want to go full frame. I have a 4 year old Nikon D3200 which was great as an introduction, but now I want something more capable.

I’ve been doing it a fair amount, and I figure I’ve only spent about $500 CAD on the hobby so far, so might as well get a camera with more than 6.1 megapixels and that can shoot better at night.

Yeah Im most interested in Astrophotography, Night Landscapes, and better video capabilities for documenting family events. The D3200 is a good basic tool but the auto-focus with video is terrible; light-sensitivity is sufficient but I’d like something much better. I look forward to seeing how you do with the new camera.

It’ll be another two or three paycheques before I get it, but absolutely.
